Hales Passage Cemetery Policies

Adopted by Board of Trustees April 2009 - Revised 2013, Updated 2019

1. ANNUAL MEETING
The annual meeting will be held the Saturday before the Memorial Day weekend immediately after the work party. It will be in the Sears’s garage across the street from the cemetery if the Sears family agrees.

2. GATE ACCESS
The personnel gates will always be unlocked. The vehicle gates will always be locked unless there are people working in the cemetery. The key to these locks is kept behind the hose reel on the south side of the grounds.

3. INHERITANCE
Plots may be passed down to family members by inheritance. The Secretary must be notified of any changes made for record keeping.

4. INTERMENT FEE
A $50.00 burial fee will be charged for each burial and/or each interment of cremated remains. A Burial Tracking Record, (an application for Burial) form is available from the Secretary.

5. BURIALS
A coffin must be used, but it could be a simple pine box. A vault is not required. All cremains must be buried in an urn.

6. NUMBER of BURIALS per PLOT
Only one casket is allowed per plot. Multiple cremations are allowed per plot. The Secretary must be notified of any additions or changes for records

7. HEADSTONES
A permanent headstone or marker is required to be installed within one year of any burial.

8. CREMATIONS
The top of an urn or container of cremated remains must be placed a minimum of 18' below the ground. The scattering of ashes on cemetery grounds is not permitted. Families are permitted to dig the hole.

9. EXCESS DIRT
Dirt that is removed from a burial plot for a casket or urn must be moved to the designated area by burn pile.

10. PLOT BORDERS
If family would like to put borders around a plot, or a series of plots, the borders must be flush with the ground. It is the family’s responsibility to maintain such.

11. SHRUBBERY, PLANTS & FLOWERS
All plantings must be approved by the Board. Flowers and ground covers may be planted within the plot borders if maintained by the family. No glass containers are allowed

12. NEW AREA vs. OLD
Most plots will be sold in the 'new' (northwest quarter) of the cemetery. Members that have relatives in the old section may buy plots close to their relatives if available and accessible.

12. PLOT BUYBACK
The Cemetery Association does not buy back plots.

13. PETS
Pets are not allowed to roam in the cemetery.
